Sales Tax varies from state to state. Many small business owners I have encountered are not familiar with this process. If looking to outsource this process, it’s important to question your candidates with questions that will have you make the right decision.
Here are some of the questions I recommend asking.
How many different states’ sales tax returns do you have experience with? You certainly want them to have experience in the states you have liability in.
Are you familiar with surtaxes? See if they can explain surtaxes to you.
Are you familiar with any municipality taxes? Again, an interesting question to see if they understand that
What is your process for processing sales tax returns?
Have you ever been late in filing a sales tax return? How did you handle it?
