I am frequently asked how to know if I am hiring the right person. First of all, let me say if you have this issue, I bet your unemployment rates are high as well. I say this because in most states, terminating someone for the inability to meet the job requirements is a chargeable claim. You want to make sure the individual is able to do the job before making the hire. I know you say that is easier said than done but there are tools out there to assist you.
Make sure you have a job description that defines the specifications of the job. Then, you want to have a valid testing process to determine if the applicant really has those specifications. If you can, give them an assessment test prior to bringing them on board. You want to have a good training program to bring them up to speed with your systems. Finally, you want to monitor performance closely to ensure they are able to do the job.
Remember, slow to hire, quick to fire. In some states you would not be liable for unemployment if the new hire terminates within a certain period of time.
