What is an HR Certification?

For years, the Human Resource Certification Institute or HRCI was the major certification institute for HR Professionals. The institute offers an extension examination in which only 50% of those taking the exam pass. HR Professionals study for months to take the exam and should they pass they are awarded credentials. Most common credentials are the Professional in Human Resources or PHR and the Senior Professional in Human Resources or SPHR. There are other certifications such as Global, Administrative, and even a California certification.
In 2015, the Society for Human Resource Management or SHRM, announced it would also be offering certification credentials with similar requirements. The credentials provided by SHRM are the SHRM-CP SHRM Certified Professional and the SHRM – SCP SHRM Senior Certified Professional.
There are strict guidelines to sit for the exam. In most cases the Senior professional must have 8-10 years of senior-level HR experience in order to even sit for the exam.
