Regardless of our position or tenure with our company, we are always faced with new situations, new procedures, new tools, new products. New things come automatically with the constant and inevitable changes surrounding us. How do we best approach something that’s new to us?
The point I want to make is that when you do something for the first time, it feels strange and new, and you will make mistakes at the beginning. You may even make the same mistakes multiple times until the task becomes a routine and you feel comfortable doing it.
Be prepared that you’ll always be faced with something new in your life. Whatever your situation is, take the learning points from the following: Find a good teacher who can explain to you precisely what you are supposed to do and why you are supposed to do it in a certain way. The operative word here is “why”. When you understand why things need to be done in a certain way, you will be able to connect the reasons and steps, and, therefore, remember the new task much better.
If you have a teacher who cannot explain to you the Why, then it’s time to look for a new teacher who can explain it to you. It’s part of the learning process. Always get the “Why” with the “How”. How do I need to do this and why do I need to do it that way? Select teachers who can explain the How’s and Why’s. Have your teacher watch you while you do the task and correct you when you make a mistake. And keep practicing until you feel confident you can do it one hundred percent on your own. And don’t let a few failed attempts or a rough start discourage you. Don’t give up! Keep trying until you get it. At the end, you will succeed and feel great that you have mastered something new.
