Employee discipline problems bumming you out. Listen in. I got a call from a client the other day. He said, “My employees missed 25% of their time since the first of the year. I wanna fire them.” And I said, “Have you talked to them about it? Have you documented any of their time off?” Well, he had time cards to show it, but he never spoke to them about it.
My answer was, “You need to discuss it. You need to warn them. You need to have a process.” If he had done all of that, he would’ve verbally warned them, written them up, possibly suspended them. He needed a policy, he needed a disciplinary policy. With that, he could have fired him that day without it. He now needs to start the process and he’s gotta keep that person a little bit longer.
Yes, he could fire them, but we’re trying to protect him from any potential liability. So we wanna go through the proper channels.
