When I graduated from college with a Bachelors Degree in Language and Linguistics, my plan was that I would get a job in the international business arena where I could utilize my knowledge of German and Spanish and at the same time travel the world.
After three months of searching for a career in that field, I was given the opportunity to work for an electronics manufacturer in the Personnel Department (the term Human Resources was not used at that time). I was hired as a Personnel Assistant and my main responsibility was to support management in translation when they communicated to our Spanish-speaking employees.
I quickly realized that helping people was my passion and I absolutely love my job. My supervisor, who was the Director, also saw my passion and encouraged me to go back to school and work on my Master’s Degree. At first, I was reluctant but realized it was a great opportunity to further my education which was paid for 100% by the company.
That was the beginning of an incredible career journey for me.
Fast forward almost 20 years and I found myself wanting to further my HR knowledge and set a goal to become HR Certified. I accomplished that goal in 2002 when I passed the Human Resource Certification Institute’s Senior Certified Professional in Human Resources.
In studying for my certification, the materials were broken down into six areas of Human Resources which is the Body of Knowledge. In thinking about this Body of Knowledge of Human Resources, I realized the average person may not be familiar with all of the components that are part of the Human Resource field and so I decided this would be a great blog series.
