I was recently asked what to pay a nonexempt employee who was traveling from Florida to China for business.
I jokingly responded, don’t send them. It’s a complicated process especially on flights that take a day or two. Then you deal with the return flight and in both cases the time changes.
There is actually a law called the Portal to Portal Act and defines when you pay someone for their travel time.
The Act includes when to pay someone not only for travel but for wait times, prep time, and travel to and from work.
It’s important to understand the nuances. I’ve actually seen employers pay more than required for travel time.
If you have more questions, I suggest consulting with an experienced HR professional.
