My first response is always, document, document, document.
It is so important to document any issues involving employees so that should any of the issues escalate to termination, you have the proof you would need to defend your actions.
I’ve gotten so many calls regarding the need to terminate an individual but they are in the middle of a worker’s compensation claim or they are pregnant. These are scenarios that could cause legal issues if not handled properly.
Employers will say, their performance was bad prior to their injury or announcement of pregnancy but I didn’t take any action when I should have. Now the employer is “stuck” with the situation.
As the saying goes “slow to hire, quick to fire”
