Helping clients navigate the gray areas of employment law—so they can focus on what matters most: their people

October 29, 2025by Barbara Flynn0

This week’s story is about one of our clients who reached out with a very sensitive concern. They discovered that an employee had a medical condition that could impact their ability to work safely with patients.

Naturally, this raised some questions: What are their rights as an employer? How should they move forward in a way that protects both the employee and the people they serve?

When they called me, I was able to give them clear guidance. I explained that they were within their rights to provide the employee’s job duties to their physician and request a fit-for-duty note. This way, the doctor could determine—based on the specific job requirements—whether the employee could safely perform the role.

The client was immediately relieved. Having that clear, compliant path forward gave them peace of mind. They told me how much they appreciated being able to simply pick up the phone and get advice that not only answered their question but helped them feel confident in their decision.

At People First, that’s what we’re here for: making the hard questions easier, so our clients can focus on their people and their mission.
